I am having trouble configuring IPAQ 3870 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack to use Telstra's GPRS Service.
When I rang Telstra they said the Pack is Not Supported and the only bit of advice they could give me is that I need Build 795 or later and wished me luck (if they are referring to the Software on the Expansion Pack it is Build 776).
I have configured a GPRS Service with an APN of telstra.corp.
When it tries to connect it prompts for a 'Username, Password & Domain" which Telsra said I should leave blank, it then tries to dial GPRS0 and then displays a message:
"There is no modem at the number dialed. etc/etc"
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I am having a similar problem to Tony. I have tried several setups, from otehr forums, I have configured a GPRS Service with an APN of "telstra.internet". The Microsoft guide to GPRS connects suggest setting the number to dial to **99***1# or *99# with the extra string AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,,"telstra.internet". Neither of these seem to work with the Telstra connection.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

There's no need to enter any phone numbers in the Wireless Pack setup. Just leave them blank. Tony has managed to sort it out. He had 2 GPRS entries when there's only the need for one.
Angus, I'll give you a call tomorrow and see if we can sort it out for you too.
Thanks,

I have the message "unable to connect with the current settings"etc when I leave the connection number blank or at the default "GPRS0".
Variations of *99# don't work either
Any suggestions? |

Please check the following settings.
1. Regional Setting should be Englich (Australia)
2. With the GPRS Sleeve, you do not need to enter the phon number or the extra dial string.
3. The wait for dial tone should not be ticked.
The phone number of *99# etc, and the extra dial string of CGDCONT=1, etc are for use when connecting the iPAQ via IR or Bluetooth via a IR or BT GPRS mobile phone.
4. In the GPRS Wireless Pack Configuration PDF file, in Step 8, the Area code and the Country code should be left blank.
5. No need to enter Username, Password, and Domain when connecting to Telstra, Vodafone, and Optus networks in Australia
6. Make sure that you're using the same settings as seen in the screen captures in Step 9 of the GPRS Wireless Pack Configuration PDF file ie. the Connection Settings are "Compaq Wireless Pack", "Work Settings", and "The Internet"
The 2nd screen shot in Step 9, "This network connects to the Internet" should also be ticked. |

I have put together the attached screen shots when setting up a GPRS connection from scratch. Hopefully, I haven't missed anything. Please let me know if I have.
Please note that the settings I've used apply to Telstra, Vodafone, and Optus networks in Australia. |

My GPRS is working now, it appears that although Telstra send you SMS messages to enable GPRS, it still takes a day or two. |

Thanks for the connection doco - worked first time.
A couple more questions:
What are we all doing for virus protection for incoming POP mail?
Does the GPRS network connection need some sort of firewall on the iPAQ?
Or a wider question - what do we need to do for security whilst connected to GPRS?

Dom,
Are you using the jacket with or without the earpiece?
Without the earpiece, it is possible that one of your fingers may inadvertently cover the mic hole near the bottom of the jacket.
I will attempt to answer your question on security later on. |

Firstly, just let me add that I have configured my IPAQ 3870 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack to use Telstra's GPRS Service without any problems after following Bernard's most recent instructions as per his forum entry on 15th October (Althought I had to get him to email it to get it).
With regards to Dom's email for virus protection, you might want to try out Trend Micro's PC-cillin for Wireless which you can find at http://www.trendmicro.com/download/product.asp?productid=2. At the moment there are apparently no Pocket PC viruses in the wild and this only scans for VB Script and Excel viruses. I think the most important thing is ensuring that the Desktop that you ActiveSync to is protected.
A POP delivered email like a .EXE that would infect a PC cannot run on an iPaq, and is only at risk to the Desktop that it is syncd to.
As for firewalls, I have no suggestions and do not know of anything available for Pocket PC's...
Have experienced the following issues...
1) When both the iPaq and the GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack were fully charged I once received an error that the Wireless Pack was flat, had to reboot it and it reinstalled the software from the Wireless Pack flash although it was already loaded on the iPaq.
2) Have had the GSM connection drop where the indicator was flashing red... it would not reconnect to the network until I did turned off the Wireless Pack and reinitialised the iPaq to Wireless Pack connection. This has happened twice since Friday.
A few questions of my own...
1) I understand that the IPAQ 3870/3970 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack combination cannot work with a Bluetooth headset - is there any plans in the wings to rectify this?
2) Is there a simple way to answer a phone via a button or anything other than pulling out your stylus and selecting from the screen?
3) I'm assuming a standard .WAV file is used for the Ring Toneand we simply copy any .WAV into the Windows directory and select it as an alternative.
4) Is there any functionality or plans for multiple profiles ie. Ring Groups for contacts?
5) Is there a standard HP case that suits the IPAQ 3870 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack combination? I've resorted to a Vaja case...
6) Is the hands free a 'standard' hands free type cable? I am wondering if I can convert a Nokia car kit to suit... hmmmmm.
Must say that I love the SMS functionality with the equivalent of 'Mail Merge' - great feature set! Am a little disappointed with the phone software functionality... and no hands free through speaker...
Thanks for the great support Bernard! |

Lots of good points there.
I've installed the TrendMicro scanner - its a passive scanner - but given the resources available thats fine.
On the firewall - I'm playing with CheckPoint's SecureClient for CE - it works fine for Securid VPN back into the office - it also has a firewall built in - but we still need to configure a policy server to get the firewall running.
I agree - the SMS stuff is great - the phone is not so good - I would have thought handsfree would have been standard first release. Also there is a long delay on Wake-up when the iPAQ is powered off - giving very little time to answer before it goes to MessageBank.
I also tried all the GPRS functionality thru my Nokia 6310 - linked to the iPAQ with BlueTooth - and it works very well......

Dom,
Thanks for the tip on the CheckPoint's SecureClient for CE, will give it a try myself.
Also I'm just about to get the All-Locations GPRS Traffic Counter for monitoring traffic... might be worth a look for some of you - check out http://www.ppcw.net/stories.php?story=02/10/17/0662910 ... gotta be careful with those GPRS charges!
SpB also have a similar program, but apparently not as good...
As a note, standard .WAV seems to work, but not all formats, 22KHz Mono 8 Bit definately works so give that a try - just place the file in your Windows directory and change your voice options.
Thanks,
Steve. |

For your interest, Microsoft's Pocket PC Phone Edition Ring Tone Packs .WAV files seem to work perfectly with the GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack. You can find it at http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/downloads/installringtones.asp - download the file and install it on your iPAQ. Copy the .WAV files you want from the \My Device\Windows\rings directory to the \My Device\Windows directory. You can then set your ring tone in the Voice Settings option of the Voice Dialer.
You can uninstall the application from your device and PC once you've finished and free up the space.

Steve. |

Firstly, thanks Stephen & Dom for your entries in this forum.
Here're some answers to Stephen's message posted on 21Oct02.
1) I understand that the IPAQ 3870/3970 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack combination cannot work with a Bluetooth headset - is there any plans in the wings to rectify this?
BL> This is not supported on the Wireless Pack as the Bluetooth headset technology was introduced after the functional design phase of the Wireless Pack was completed. There are plans to implement this in the next generation iPAQs.
2) Is there a simple way to answer a phone via a button or anything other than pulling out your stylus and selecting from the screen?
BL> The next version of the WPS will allow answering of call by pressing the blue button on the sleeve.
3) I'm assuming a standard .WAV file is used for the Ring Toneand we simply copy any .WAV into the Windows directory and select it as an alternative.
BL> This is correct.
4) Is there any functionality or plans for multiple profiles ie. Ring Groups for contacts?
BL> There are no plans to add additional features at this point. So adding multiple profiles is not in the plans.
5) Is there a standard HP case that suits the IPAQ 3870 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack combination? I've resorted to a Vaja case...
BL> I've found the iHolsterIV to be a good solution. See http://www.innovativemobilesolutions.net/iholsteriv.htm
6) Is the hands free a 'standard' hands free type cable? I am wondering if I can convert a Nokia car kit to suit... hmmmmm.
BL> Answering of the call by pressing the blue button (next WPS version) may solve the issue. I haven't found one but it's possible that someone like http://pc-mobile.net/dhf.htm may be able to make a special kit. |

Sounds like the 5400 Series will see the benefits of all the maturing technology... looking forward to it already!
Thanks for your tips on the case - I've received my Vaja case, and it suits me perfectly... got the 888 - CLASSIC (iPAQ 3800 & 3900 series plus GSM/GPRS module with snap closure)... it fits very snuggly and has holes in the rear for the Speaker, Microphone and Power Button on the Wireless unit.

Try this link for what maybe a bluetooth headset equivelent in RF. Looks like it will plug in to most mobile phones. The unit comprises of a base transmitter that plugs in to the ear phone jack on mobile phones and attaches to the back of the phone itself. Second piece is the (stand alone, no wires) earpiece & mic, similar to blutooth headset. I have sent an e-mail to confirm the correct device function. Maybe worth a try.

Wayne, I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to ask questions about file compression but if it is to do with playing these over GPRS then it's a different story.
Not 100% sure but maybe an mpeg file size may be less than an avi. See http://www.mpegtv.com/wince/pockettv/
The other is streaming video/audio which the PPC Windows Media will play happily over GPRS. Check out WindowsMedia.com from the Pocket IE Favourites. |

Thanks for the info Bernard,
I'll give it a go. One of the test assignments I have given the wireless pack is the upload/download capability of the pack to transfer video & image files from distant locations back to base without having to use land lines. At pressent, I have had success with images (500k image=20 minutes).
Q. could you provide tech specs on the modem capacity of the wireless pack ? |

Hi !
I've just uppgraded my ipaq to rom 2.20 and guess what the gsm/gprs wireless pack will drop the network after a "wakeup". i get "No Network" but is working fine after a soft reset.
And i have confirm this with an another ipaq with rom 2.14 and it's working fine.
Is this a known problem ?
Is there anyone who can confirm that an ipaq3630 with rom 2.20 is working with the gsm/gprs pack ?.
And the sleeve got the latest software. |

Hi
I am using the GSM/GPRS Sleeve on the IPAQ 3790 with the latest firmware update posted on the Compaq Website version 1.0a62 build 776, 2002-07-12.
Does anyone know when the new version of the WPS software might be available (alluded to in other posts).
ALso, Compaq has just posted a new End User Update (posted on the 19th of NOvember)...any known incompatibilities with the Sleeve...mine is working great (on the ATT Wireless network her in the states) and I don't want to ruin a good thing!!

Are you getting this problem after every wakeup or just occasionally... I have had this same problem on v2.20 3870 with the Wireless Pack.
On a reloaded 'fresh' 3870 with v2.20 I had significantly less issues...
With regards to EUU3, I have loaded it a few days ago and have not had any issues thus far... any official comment Bernard?

Also, my carrier has a service where when one dials #121, you get a voice activated service that gives you stock quotes etc. . .they are doing this to drive minutes usage. . .anyway, on my WPS software, I get a message saying "This supplemental service is not supported"...this same chip works fine in a traditional cell phone (dialinjg #121). . .anyone else run into this type of problem. . .is there a configuration setting in WPS for this somewhere?? |

Philip,
I have loaded EUU3 on a 3870 and a 3970 and had no problems at all with the 3970/Wireless Pack operation.
As to replacement headsets - no idea - a standard phone headset may work, although they are three contact vs the wireless pack four contact.
Have you tried this Bernard?
Might be worth a try...
The # issue - no idea... probably a software restriction.

Thanks for the reply...will probably try loading EUU sometime during the week. . I have been able to find a four contact Plantronics which appears to work but would much rather have an official spare headset to by. . .this appears to be a real hole in the product plan. . .but my headset is already scatchy from a loose connection and I expect it to give up the ghost any day now. . .
As for the # thing, it certainly does appear to be a software restriction in the WPS software. I have heard via unofficial sources that the new WPS software release is barely weeks away. . .don't know if that is one of the fixes or not...will have to wait and see, I guess.
Bernard...any ideas on headset spares??

Hi Bernard,
I inquired with Compaq/HP Singapore about the expansion pack and this is what I got: "This is the product that has inherently bugs and defects and the final firmwares are not ready to serve the true-blue GPRS functions. Hence Spore and a number of countries have decided not to sell in the open market". Just wanted to know how true is this as I noticed quite a number of people have used it already with no problem. Just a let down as I was really looking forward to getting one. |

Hi...I think this product got a bad reputation (within Compaq) because the earlier versions of the firmware were not very good (IMHO)...I use mine extensively. . .GPRS...voice...from a performance perspective. . .solid as a rock. . .there are two caveats. . .you MUST do the intall of the CD PRECISELY as instructed and then follow that up with the install of the latest firmware off the Compaq website. . .again...PRECISELY as instructed (and with the firmware from the website, it is easy to skip a step. . )...
They are not yet sold in the states so we order our from the UK and use them with the 3970 (with the new EUU)...
Good luck. . .

Ray, I agree with Philip re "earlier versions of the firmware were not very good".
We've been conducting an Early Adopter Program here in Australia for over 2 months and we have not come across major issues. The software/firmware released with the jacket is Build 776 (which is currently on the web).
I've had a number of requests from people in other countries for the config guide that I mentioned in my previous posts and since they've followed them, they have had success with their setups.
To the people who are not using their GPRS Sleeve in Australia and have purchased these from a country that Compaq/HP sell to the public, I'd suggest you contact your local Compaq/HP Tech Support first and if that is not possible for some reason, please post it here and we'll see if we can all help.
Thanks. |

Marc, you may want to check that you have the latest iPAQ 3870 ROM from the web which fixes a number of issues including Bluetooth Manager (if you have an early 3870). The other thing to be aware is to always start Bluetooth before any other apps (and do a soft reset to 'clear' all background tasks before that). Also, check that you have enough memory. |

Just a note to see whether someone has a workaround for the GPRS sleeve locking up and the "carrier does not allow this function" message when you get a call coming in while GPRS is active or when you get a second call coming in?
There appears to be a few omissions in the current firmware that could do with some looking at?!
BTW: Has Compaq / HP considered providing the software / firmware source as open / GPL code to allow third-party developers to write a suite of phone software with enhanced functionality...?
All the best

Hi,
I am developping an application on an iPAQ 3870 with a GSM/GPRS wireless Pack. I am trying to make a GSM call inside this application.
I try to use TAPI in a C++ application, but it doesn't work (the LineMakeCall function returns "LINEERR_INVALMEDIAMODE").
is it the right way to make calls ?
is there an easier API to use ? (is WPS also using TAPI, or another API?)
is there any sample or tutorial anywhere?
thanks for your answers

The 829 Firmware update appears to be fairly solid. . .there are a few cosmetic changes (e.g. new screen pops up when you do a query from the voice/network pages). . .you can answer the phone reliably by pushing the blue key on the back of the unit. . .and the GPRS connected seems more reliable (at least the byte counters don't count in negative numbers any more). I am still having problems with the #121 service offered by ATT. . .but at least the phone is dialing it now and it is an error message from ATT Wireless that I am getting (D3SC132 if anyone knows what that means). . .
Thanks and hope all have a great holiday

If you send an email to pblank@probusiness.com, I will send you the firmware that I have received. . .please understand that this is not an officially santioned firmware release and you install this at your own 'risks and perils'. . .it was forwarded to me by a third party with the same disclaimer . . .:)
Good luck. . .

Hi, does anyone knows why my friends very often get NETWORK BUSY when they tried calling me in my Wireless Pack? But when I switched the sim card to a normal phone, I don't have such a problem. Thus this is not a mobile provider's fault.
I have upgraded to EUU3 of 3970 and having firmware: 1.1.04/063 (19 June 2002), software: 1.0a62, Build 776 (12 July 2002), hardware: 1.4
Thanks. |

I ordered mine from Expansys UK, popped in GSM/GPRS activated AT&T SIM card, GSM works great with no drop out. Having probs with GPRS (new to the service). Does anybody know the AT&T connection settings (phone #, user name, password, proxy settings, APN, TCP/IP, server addresses, ect.)? I've been testing it with the "G" present to no avail. Currently using the basic build 644 (without wake-up feature), haven't upgraded. I have read in other forums of problems with upgrading sw for the wake-up feature. They now have wake-up feature but now their phone drops out. Don't want that to happen here. Any help on the AT&T connection settings would be appreciated. thanxx |
